Slow.
The word keeps coming back to me. I know he's been behind and we've worked really hard with him, but his teacher doesn't show any signs of working with me to help the problems. It breaks my heart. I keep telling myself that she's a 22-year old girl who has no experience at all with 4 year olds (or parents) and that she doesn't know what she's talking about.
Nathan's OT happened to call after we got home, and I talked to her about these things and basically she agreed that the teacher doesn't know anything about SPD and that Nathan is extremely intelligent. She said we could set new goals at our next meeting.
I guess this is just another case for why we need to homeschool him. I'm not ready to lump him in with the other kids and hope he finds a place in the herd. I think it's ridiculous at age 4 to label him as slow....we can't settle for that. I think we need to work as hard as we can to help him be the best Nathan that he can be. At least by working with him at home, we can go at his pace, and know that he can have the best opportunity to not fall through the cracks.
I know this is tv, but that happened on Army Wives this season. The teacher thought Finn was slow and it turned out he was gifted and not being challenged enough. Teachers don't know everything!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the more I think about it...the more I think she's stupid. I mean, if his pediatrician, an OT with a master's degree, 2 speech therapists, and a PT think he has a sensory issue, then maybe they're right and she's a moron. I wish I had more cooperation from her. Oh well...we'll get through this year, and then we'll be on our own.
ReplyDeleteHe's gifted in some areas....he loves reading and science and is very very creative.
