Disney for school? 2011-12 Curriculum

I learned a lot of things about myself during this last year of homeschooling.  We tried to do Sonlight, but really early on, I had trouble keeping to the instructor's guide.  Then I bought the Well Planned Day Organizer, thinking I could make my own instructor's guide, and I couldn't stick with that either.  In both cases, we would be ahead in some things and behind in others and the guides only made me feel anxious about not getting it all done.

Instead, we worked on developing a routine and setting small goals for each day.  My goals for each day were to get our "core" subjects done...Bible, reading, writing, and math.  Anything beyond that, I considered bonus. We're pretty solid on our core now, so this year I'm focusing on the "bonus."

NATHAN'S CORE (1st Grade--6 years old): Nathan's been doing well this year with school...loves math, hates anything that he has to write.  He really struggles with handwriting and getting him to do any is like pulling teeth.  He loves anything hands-on, especially science.

Reading:  We're working through a lot of We Both Read books from the library, and assorted readers that I've accumulated during the past year.  He can do level 1-2 (between 1st and 2nd grade) in the We Both Read books.  (We LOVE LOVE LOVE this series!!!)

He's also working through the Explode the Code series.  He has struggled with book 3, so we're moving to 3.5 and going on to 4 and 5 this year.  The good part is that his reading has surpassed his phonics level, so we're going to use it more like a spelling book.  The bad part is that after I purchased books 4-6, Nathan decided he hated phonics.

We're doing Horizon's 1st grade math this year.  He's worked on it through the summer, so he's on lesson 20 already.  He likes math the most of all his core subjects.  We use Math-U-See blocks for manipulatives.

Don't laugh.  I'm going to start introducing grammar this year, and I'm going to use this Disney series.  I think it's a really good introduction to Grammar, and between this and assorted printoffs from the internet, we'll cover all of what we need for grammar for the first grade. I also like that this series has books for girls and boys separately....the girl grammar book has a Tinkerbell theme.

BECCA'S CORE (4 year old, doing some Kindergarten, will do SOME of these every day)  Becca's in that fuzzy area....she's way too advanced for preschool, but not ready to do full-fledged kindergarten.  She loves workbooks, but book-learning isn't her style...(just the opposite of Nathan).

She's finishing up HWT level K quickly, and will begin on the 1st grade level.

She's also going to start Explode the Code book 1.  I will probably alternate between doing the Handwriting and the Phonics unless she enjoys doing both.

I found a princessy math book and a vocab book for her to do too!  I bought quite a few of the books in this series for her.  She really loves her Disney and if these make her excited about learning, I'm all for it!  (and I love Disney too)

We've been stalled on her reading lessons for awhile.  She can sound words out, but she doesn't really know them by sight just yet.  Maybe the above Disney stuff will help.

OTHER DAILY SUBJECTS:
  • Bible --last year we read a some of Egermeier's Bible Story Book during dinner.  Then we had Nicholas and chaos ensued.  I want to get back on track with this., and now that he eats table food, it will be should be easier.  We also have Kid Concoctions of Biblical Proportions, that I would like to do family devos with.  We haven't really gotten it into our routine yet....so that's a goal for this upcoming school year.  They also do AWANAs.

  • AUDIO BOOKS:  Books on tape, CD, Online Storytimes, Leapfrog Tag books  They each do one of these while I'm working 1 on 1 with the other.
  • READ ALOUDS:  We're going to read Ramona books, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Winnie the Pooh (again, I love it!), among other books we decide to read.  I haven't exactly decided on the whole year of read a-louds yet.
  • PIANO:  I started Piano with them, and but we weren't regular about it.  This year I hope to make it in our routine.

WEEKLY SUBJECTS:  I want to cover each of these once a week (so 1 day of science, art, etc.)  We will do these subjects together.
  • Science: We are more "unschooled" for science.  I try to follow the kids' interests and provide lots of resources for them to discover.  Some activities I plan to do are from Science Chef,  and 50 Science things to make and do. I'm trying to focus on the "fun" of science at this age...no worksheets or set curriculum.  Nathan loves to read science books and we have quite a few of the Usborne Internet Linked ones, so we'll probably read those and check out the websites.

Art:  I'm not an artist...the last time I took art was in 6th grade, and the only reason I got an A is because I was nice to the teacher.  This book makes art look easy and I want to work through some of it.  It has a famous work of art, some description of the artist, and then a project based upon the artist's technique.  It says ages 6 +...Can't be too difficult right??

  • Creative writing/journaling:  Once a week, I'll provide a prompt and then copy what they say.  I want to make them cute little keepsake journals or something, I need some ideas for this.  I also bought a How to Write book for each of them.  (Nathan's is Cars themed) These focus on the elements of stories and how to write them.

  • Board/Card games:  games are a great way to teach kids about taking turns, playing fair, being good sports, developing strategy, etc.  I want to be more deliberate about playing games with the kids this year.
  • Computer time:  starfall.com, pbskids, etc.
  • Stuff I discover on Pinterest
We started workboxes toward the end of last school year.  I hope to do a "Workbox Wednesday" post weekly.   I can't wait to read what everyone else is doing!

HMJ--7-29-11

In my life this week…kids had VBS this week.  I spent the week hanging out with hubby and baby.  Nathan and I have had intense stomach pains this week.  I feel better today, hopefully we're on the mend.
My favorite thing this week was…having a lady clean my house!  I bought a groupon deal for a house cleaning and I used it this week.  Such a nice treat, I'm thinking of having it done at least once a year!
What’s working/not working for us…getting up for VBS...we totally aren't morning people.  We were late every day.
Things I’m working on…deciding if I want to move school downstairs for the time being.  I like doing school on the main level, but Nicholas is now super-mobile, and it would be easier to contain him if we have 1 really good babyproofed room.
I’m reading…One of my friends from Elementary school wrote an e-book, so I'm reading it.  It's a murder mystery, which isn't my usual type of genre, but I'm over half way through it and I have no idea whodunit...that's a good thing right?
I’m cooking…bland food, trying to heal our stomachs.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…Why is it so hard for to get all 3 kids to cooperate at the studio??

Stomach Pain and other ramblings....

So now I have the stomach pain, and boy is it intense!!!  Nathan's still bothered by it, it woke him up last night, and Becca says her stomach hurts (but that could be sympathy pain).  I wish I knew the cause of it all, so that I could make sure it leaves our household soon!!

I went to get Nicholas after a nap, and this is what I found...

A year ago, that was her bed!!
Nicholas is getting more adventurous, and the big kids still love playing with him.  Hopefully that continues as he gets more mobile (and into their stuff).  I think we're in the market for a gate...

Any idea of how to protect him from going off the side?  Both staircases are open, and we don't really want to get railings....I was thinking of putting a body pillow on the side to discourage him..

HMJ--7-22-11

In my life this week…Well...it happened.  The baby got mobile to the extreme.  He's crawling, pulling up, furniture cruising....pretty busy for a 7 month old.  We aren't baby proofed very well, so I've spent my week chasing him and pulling things out of his mouth.
In our homeschool this week…more math and reading
My favorite thing this week was…spending time with my mom.
Questions/thoughts I have…Am I the only one not prepping my curriculum for fall??  Maybe it's the weather, but it doesn't feel like "Back to School" time yet!!!!  I love love summer, even in this 100+ degree heat index!
I’m reading…Just finished an Amish series by Beverly Lewis.  Next up is a biography of George Washington.  I have to read a non-fiction book for our library's program, and there isn't a whole lot of selection.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…My little furniture cruiser and his sister....I love how much she loves him.

No Workbox Wednesday (again)

Nathan's been having stomach pain, so intense it wakes him up at night.  I finally took him to the pediatrician yesterday and they put him on Zantac, hoping it was an acid problem.  Hopefully this works...if not, he'll have to have some tests run at the hospital (sonograms, x-rays, etc.) trying to fix the problem.

Needless to say, school has taken a backseat when the kid is sick.  Grandma's been staying all week too, so she could take a class for teacher re-certification.

The weather has been so hot, we've had to stay in.   Thankfully we have a pool, so we've been spending some time there.

We'll get back to school sometime soon.

New Camera

I got a new camera yesterday and I've been playing around with it....

It takes HD video too...

I'm still figuring out the software and everything whenever the kids give me some time.

The Homeschool Mother's Journal
In my life this week…I took the kids to my mom's so that Mark could have some time to work on his Honey-Do list.  I'm not doing that again for a long long long time.  The first night, I didn't get to sleep at all...the kids tag-teamed being awake.  JOY.  At least my aversion to caffeine came back and I was able to use that to stay awake most of the time.
In our homeschool this week…We did have school a couple of days this week...just more handwriting and math.
I am inspired by…
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…We went to the beach, and we also went to see my grandparents at the nursing home.
My favorite thing this week was…coming home to my bed.
Things I’m working on…Baby proofing!  My little one is on the go!
I’m cooking…barely at all....too hot to turn on the stove.
I’m grateful for…my husband, I really missed him this weekend!
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…I'm still pretty proud of this....

7 months today!!

Nicholas is 7 months old today!  He had a checkup today (he didn't have a 6 month appointment) and he measured in at 18 lbs 10 oz, (52nd percentile), 26.75 inches (39th percentile) and his head circumference was 46.5 cm (95th percentile).  He's grown 2 inches and 3 pounds since his last checkup.  He also had to have a few shots that he handled like a champ.

He's definitely on-the-go...and he loves to crawl all around, though he has trouble getting that belly off the floor.  He can roll all the way over, though he hasn't discovered that he can roll across the room.  He pulled up on the coffee table at least 3 times this week completely unassisted.  I never had to "chase" the other two kids...I think this one is going to be a different story.  As I type this, I think he just discovered he can crawl room to room....wow, we're going to need a baby gate soon next week.

His 3rd tooth popped through this morning (yay he's getting his teeth in order!!)

How does he compare with the other two?  I don't remember how much Becca weighed at 6 months, but I know that she weighed 18lbs 13oz at 1 year....and Nathan weighed 17 lbs 10 oz at 6 months, so Nicholas is slightly bigger than Nathan and WAY bigger than Becca.

No Workbox Wednesday

Today was a gorgeous day....it's been so hot and humid lately.  We did do some school on Monday and Tuesday, but today was a day for playing outside.  The kids love the swing set...Becca loves to swing and do flips on the rings, Nathan loves the slide, and Nicholas giggles anytime he sees the swing.

Becca wanted to take some pictures so I let her use the camera a bit.  I think I have a budding photographer on my hands....

What big brothers teach little brothers....

This won't be the last trick he learns from big brother...

We probably shouldn't encourage this....

I have a feeling I'm going to be chasing a little boy really really soon.

YAY NATHAN!

If you only knew how hard this was for him...

HMJ

In my life this week…is some recuperation after having an extra 7 people in the house for the weekend.  Definitely fun...but now I'm detoxing from all the unhealthy food =) ---BTW, deep fried cookie dough is amazing!
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…We went to the fireworks downtown, but other than that, we've stayed home all week.
My favorite thing this week was…yesterday when my children were playing together and not fighting...it seems that we've had so many days of fighting/whining that I've been frustrated.  Yesterday was so much nicer!
What’s working/not working for us…We started allowances this week...working well for one child, not well for the other, but she'll figure it out soon.
Things I’m working on…taking the day for myself today!  Working on some cleaning projects while Mark takes the kids out for the morning/mid-afternoon, and then errand running while they have quiet time at home.
I’m grateful for…Fun friends and family this weekend.
Question...Trying to pick out a new camera.  I like the mega zoom ones, but I can't make decisions on which one to get!  Any ideas?

Workbox Wednesday

So it's a day late, but I thought it would be better if I put not only what the kids did, but how they did in it...

1.  Book on CD was supposed to be The Nutcracker, but we couldn't get the CD player to work, so they ended up with Sleeping Beauty on tape.

2.  Math for Nathan, which he flew through...our biggest obstacle is still writing the numbers.  It's like he forgets sometimes, even after 2 years of writing numbers.  I think something "clicked" yesterday.   Becca did HWT, and wrote quite a few words with good handwriting.   I think I'm going to do the 1st grade level with her, so that we can go back over the letters in more detail.

3.  Book of mazes.  It really helps with Nathan's pencil control, and he LOVES them.

4.  I forgot to put a reading book in there, so Nathan pointed it out to me, and got himself a We Both Read book.  We love those!  Becca was supposed to do 100 EZ, but we never got to it.

5.  Playdoh.

6.  We went outside to practice riding bikes with no training wheels.  Nathan's really close....we need to take him somewhere with more room.  Becca tries for a second and freaks out, but at least she tries.  She's still little.

7.  Swimming!

I need to make cards or something for outside activities so that they are a part of our "boxes" too!

Happy Birthday America...

So on Thursday last week, I got the crazy idea to invite a bunch of people to our house for the weekend.  Some friends from camp and their children plus Mark's parents....so that totaled out to 12 people in the house!

I wish that I would've taken pictures, but we were too busy chasing kids, talking homeschooling, cooking, and cleaning to take pictures.

We let the men cook a meal and they deep-fried everything.  Bacon, cookie dough (my favorite), moon pies, twinkies, doughnuts.  It was really good, but now I need to de-tox!

All the company left on the Monday morning.  After everyone took naps for the afternoon, we headed down to the river for the big show.

Waiting for fireworks.

The kids got bored waiting, so I let them take pictures...here's some of the better ones.

Nathan's teeth taken by Nathan
Nathan and Daddy (taken by Becca)

There was an air show too, which of course my airplane boy LOVED!  And finally fireworks!  My favorite parts....After someone sang the national anthem, Becca said, where's the cake?  I asked her what cake, and she said, it's America's birthday, where's the cake?  The other thing I love came from a book....We've been reading Ramona the Pest, and in it Ramona goes to Kindergarten, where she is introduced to singing the Star Spangled Banner, which she totally doesn't understand, and calls it the "Dawnzer Song."  After really listening to the Star Spangled Banner, Nathan looks at me and says, it's the "Dawnzer Song" you know, like Ramona! And then he got the joke.

Homeschooling Mother's Journal 7/1/11

The Homeschool Mother's Journal
In my life this week…More organizing and cleaning.  I've noticed this is a  recurring statement in this section, so hopefully I'll get to a place that I'm happy with the way that it is, and I can do something more fun!
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…We're having friends over for the weekend with less than 24 hours notice.  Other than that, we've really stayed home.
My favorite things this week are…There are simple pleasures.  The baby giggled at something spontaneously, without us trying to make him smile or laugh. He just saw something funny and started laughing.  Priceless.
My daughter caught her first lightning bug.  Nothing miraculous, at first I caught one and convinced her (this took awhile) to hold it.  Once she saw it wouldn't bite, that it tickled a bit, she went after her own.
My oldest is learning to ride a bike without training wheels.  He's a very anxious little boy and he has a bit of a motor skill delay, so it's taking him a long time to figure it all out.  He doesn't quite have it yet, but he's getting there.
I’m cooking…Lunchables...a little salty, but otherwise good.
I’m grateful for…prayers for camp.  Thanks so much everyone, we had a blast and everything worked out!  My daughter loved her sleepover, the boys did fantastic at camp, and the other kids were pretty good too!
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…Butterflies from a kit I got at the homeschooling convention
